OCEAN SAFETY STARTS IN THE CLASSROOM
The Ocean Safety for Okinawan Waters (OSOW) Classroom 1 is a free service and recommended for all newcomers to Okinawa ocean recreation.
OSOW Classroom 1 Consists of:
- A discussion of ocean risk assessment and risk management, with emphasis on the individual as greatest potential hazard.
- Instruction on how to read online data to assess sea conditions in order to mitigate risks.
- A simple checklist you can follow in order to ensure you are entering the ocean under safe conditions.
- A basic overview of tides, winds, and swell propagation.
- Hazardous marine life native to Okinawa
- An overview of popular areas for ocean recreation in Okinawa with an emphasis on specific local dangers.
- Military sea condition definitions and criteria.
