OUR PROGRAMS
LIST OF PROGRAMS
It is our goal to be able to offer the introductory classroom session of the Ocean Safety for Okinawan Waters program to every newcomer arriving to Okinawa. This introductory session in basic ocean safety risk management is essential to military personnel stationed here on Okinawa.
Course Itinerary
The program consists of 7 main sections;
- A discussion of ocean risk assessment and risk management, with emphasis on the individual as greatest potential hazard.
- Instruction on how to read online data to assess sea conditions in order to mitigate risks.
- A simple checklist you can follow in order to ensure you are entering the ocean under safe conditions.
- A basic overview of tides, winds, and swell propagation.
- Hazardous marine life native to Okinawa
- An overview of popular areas for ocean recreation in Okinawa with an emphasis on specific local dangers.
- Military sea condition definitions and criteria.
***The delivery of these seven course components leave students with a systematic thinking approach to assessing ocean conditions that will greatly reduce their risk of an accident.
Our 1-Day program begins with delivery of the OSOW Classroom 1 curriculum, followed by an in-water test and accurate self-assessment of ocean survival skills. With the knowledge gained during classroom and self-assessment, students will learn to apply a systematic approach to evaluating ocean conditions. Next, students will join instructors in exploring several marine sports activities (Surfing/SUP/snorkeling/etc.) and will also learn and practice one basic lifesaving technique (dry-rescue) so that they may be able to help in the event of an accident. Students who complete the 1-Day program will receive a certificate of completion in ocean safety risk management.
Course Itinerary
The program consists of the following sections;
- Ocean Safety Risk Management (Classroom)
- Swim skills assessment
- Survival swimming
- H2O self-defense
- Survival floating
- Life saving backstroke
